 Xi’an Han-Sen Zhai inner-city industrial wasteland renewal

Old dream, new life

Xi'an (Chinese: 西安) is the capital of Shaanxi province, located in the northwest of the People's Republic of China. Being one of the oldest cities in China, the city is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of the world. Since the 1990s, as part of the economic revival of interior China especially for the central and northwest regions, the city of Xi'an has re-emerged as an important cultural, industrial and educational centre of the central-northwest region.
Industry—especially military industry—has played a vital role in the thriving process of Xi’an in 20th century. Served as an important industrial base for industries related to national security, the purposed urban renewal area had its glorious days in the past being the core of the city. Today it is also facing with the coming crisis with industrial transformation. The design proposal aims at figuring out what is supposed to happen to the site when factories moving out and city expending.
